The DP/DR Foundations Course
There's a lot of misinformation about DP/DR online, and a real shortage of trustworthy, specialist-led explanation.
This has led to a lot of unnecessary fear, confusion and misconceptions about the condition.
So I’ve built the DP/DR Foundations Course to help address that gap.
You’ve probably spent a lot of time trying to understand what feeling detached from yourself or the world around you actually means. That's a hard thing to make sense of on your own, and specialist, trustworthy information on DP/DR is hard to come by. That's exactly why I built the DP/DR Foundations course.
Hi, I’m Dr Claudia Hallett, A Clinical Psychologist specialising in DP/DR. I’m the clinical lead of the UK’s only national and specialist NHS service for depersonalisation and derealisation, and I’ve spent over ten years working exclusively with this condition, treating clients, training clinicians, and publishing research on it. This course is built entirely from that experience.
In the course, we define what depersonalisation and derealisation actually are, so you finally have language for what you’re experiencing. Then we go into the science: what’s happening in your brain, why it happens, and why it doesn’t mean anything is broken or that you’re losing touch with reality. From there, we cover the common causes, so you can start to understand your own starting point. And crucially, we cover what keeps DP/DR going long after the original trigger has passed, because that’s the part that determines whether this shifts or stays stuck. The course closes with practical strategies you can start using straight away, plus a module for those closest to you, so they know exactly how to support you properly.
I’m really excited to be able to share this with you.
What's included in the course?
Six modules, taking you from confusion to a clear, evidence-based understanding:
What's happening to you — naming and defining depersonalisation and derealisation
The science behind DP/DR — what's actually happening in your brain, including the current thinking on the amygdala, prefrontal cortex, and interoception
What causes DP/DR — the common pathways outlined in the research
What keeps DP/DR going — the maintenance cycle and behaviours that explain why it persists long after the original trigger has passed
What you can do to help yourself — practical, realistic coping strategies for reducing how much it interferes with your life
What others can do to support you — a module to share with partners, parents, or friends
Built from over ten years of specialist NHS clinical work and published research
What this course will and won't do
This course won't replace individual therapy, and it won't make DP/DR disappear the moment you finish watching. Recovery isn't usually a single moment where symptoms switch off — it's more commonly a gradual reduction: fewer episodes, shorter episodes, less impact on your day even when it does show up.
What it will give you is the accurate, evidence-based understanding that usually takes years to find — and a clear sense of what's maintaining your symptoms and what actually helps.
